Quick answers before you buy

New to paddleboarding? Start here.

How do I pick my first paddleboard?

For most beginners, an inflatable all-around board gives you the stability to learn without feeling tippy, and packs down small enough for a closet. No roof rack needed — it's what nearly everyone in our group paddles.

Do I actually need an electric pump?

Not to get started, but hand-pumping an 11-foot board to riding pressure is a real arm workout. An electric pump gets you there in a few minutes so you show up ready to paddle, not already tired.

Is a leash really necessary?

Yes — treat it as non-negotiable. Wind and current can push an unattached board away faster than you can swim, and the leash keeps you tied to your only flotation device if you fall.

Am I legally required to wear a life jacket?

California treats paddleboards as vessels. Kids under 13 must wear a Coast Guard-approved PFD the whole time. Adults just need one on the board. Rules vary by waterway — check current CA Boating & Waterways guidance.

Can my dog come with me?

Plenty of members bring theirs. Let them get comfortable on the board on land first, start in flat calm water, and always use a dog PFD with a top handle.

Paddleboarding carries inherent risk. Gear picks are based on personal experience and are not a substitute for professional instruction, proper safety equipment, or your own judgment on the water. Girls Who Paddle SD and Hannah are not liable for any injury, loss, or damage related to the use of any product listed here. Always wear a PFD, check conditions, and paddle within your ability.
